Women, the reason you can have a credit card in your own name and don’t need a man’s signature to open a bank account is because of Gloria Steinem. RIP to this queen.
Some people put their ideas out in the world and hope they catch on. Not Gloria Steinem.
Through her writing, her speeches, and her organizing, she demanded that the world pay attention to all the ways that women had been — and in some cases, still are — treated unfairly. And she helped awaken us to problems like domestic violence, the lack of affordable child care, and unfair hiring practices that had too often been ignored or overlooked.
Gloria really was larger than life. Today, generations of women are walking a little taller and aiming a little higher because of what she fought for and achieved. Michelle and I are thinking of her family today, and everyone — women and men — who were inspired by her towering example.
@ABC I’m still Lake Ontario. My name has NOTHING to do with the Canadian providence…..it has everything to do with the Iroquois nation and meaning Beautiful Water. Thank you 🌊🌊🌊
Dolly Parton on BBC's The One Show on March 8, 2022
BBC: Dolly, I do want to touch on the fact that you were at the Academy of Country Music Awards last night and you showed your support for the people of Ukraine. Tell me about the choice to do that last night.
Dolly Parton: Well, I just felt that it was not only important but urgent to do it. There's so much grief and so much sorrow. I just can't help but feeling like that's just home. I just feel those people as if they were my own people and we need to say and do something. Whatever we can, but I just felt like I couldn't enjoy myself without us at least acknowledging them. With us having fun and us still having the freedom to do that. I just felt it was necessary for us to take a minute to acknowledge and pay respect to them and what they're going through.
May she rest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Memory eternal.
"We're all God's children. We all have a place in this world. We all need to be loved and respected," Dolly Parton told us in 2020. https://t.co/veBEXDSPAl
Democrats in #Oklahoma selected N’kiyla Jasmine Thomas as their U.S. Senate nominee to face U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern in the November general election.
Thomas, 31, is a nurse and Chickasaw Nation citizen from Ardmore who led the initial Democratic primary. https://t.co/NgvU8GJXPq
Nurse N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas has won the Democratic Senate primary runoff in Oklahoma, NBC News projects, securing another win for the party’s democratic socialist wing. https://t.co/9fd94d5cfV

At a time when millions of Americans are finding it harder to pay for groceries, housing and healthcare, when the climate crisis is causing record heatwaves and forest fires, Donald Trump felt it appropriate tonight to spew conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
Pathetically, in true authoritarian fashion, he even threatened to revoke the licenses of ABC and NBC because they would not cover his speech. Insane.
Too many Americans have fought and died to defend American democracy.
All of us, regardless of our political views, must stand together against this dangerous president who is seeking to undermine our Constitution and our basic freedoms.
It is important to resist the commodification of basic human needs. Food, water and healthcare cannot be subordinated to market considerations or geopolitical interests. Access to adequate food is a fundamental human right grounded in the dignity of every person. Meeting this need not only alleviates suffering but also addresses underlying causes of geopolitical instability. Indeed, food security is an essential component of global and integral security. https://t.co/DgkM9RegJ7
Michelle and I loved reading to this bright group of kids today!
We hope this new Chicago Public Library branch at the Obama Presidential Center will be a place where folks come to read, check out books, and connect with one another for years to come.
From the Texas Tribune:
After Mexican officials confirmed case of screwworm in Nov. 2024, USDA, under Joe Biden, closed southern ports of entry to live cattle imports to prevent spread of screwworm into U.S. Move also strained supply of cattle in Texas....
USDA reversed course in Feb 2025, after Trump took office, announcing opening of ports"
Last month in Virginia, the people made their voices heard at the ballot box and voted for new Congressional maps.
Today, the Virginia Supreme Court ignored the will of the people and overturned those democratically chosen maps.
This ruling gives a boost to Donald Trump's effort to rig the 2026 elections and the Republicans' long game to attack voting rights.
We are rightfully outraged, but we will not give up. We must continue our fight to restore the power of the people.
This exchange between @SenBlumenthal and Trump’s judicial nominees is utterly astounding.
If you can watch this and still think this country isn’t falling into authoritarianism and fascism under Donald Trump, then you are not being honest with yourself.
Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.
The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.
Trump is mired in an illegal war that's destabilizing the world while spiking inflation and immiserating Americans, a key part of the government remains unfunded, and the Republicans who control both chambers of Congress are fixated on ... spending money for a vanity ballroom that Trump vowed would be privately funded.
A complete clown show.
