Proud of our study on access, outcomes, and cost of surgical care among people experiencing homelessness. Many thanks to @hdecker731 for presenting and @AnneMStey for the mentorship!

Mentorship in residency is vital, but unequally distributed. Proud of our new paper in @JAMASurgery, and always grateful for my own mentors on this project @YueyungHu@DrCNClarke@kbilimoria
In a national survey of general surgery residents, mentorship was associated with improved education and wellness measures; however, 33% of residents lack a mentor, and non-White and Hispanic residents had lower odds of reporting meaningful mentorship. https://t.co/hAgCqMUvCZ
After injuries, people experiencing homelessness had increased adjusted length of stay compared to housed patients. Differences in adjusted length of stay were greatest for older patients and those with minor injury. https://t.co/K8qEPul38s
In this interview, I pull back the curtain on our research presented at #AAST2023 to discuss why we pursued this topic and our next steps for the future!

Calling residents from any program seeking an external mentors, and calling all surgeons who are interested in mentoring a trainee who isn’t at their home institution. 98% of mentees have a minoritized identity. @The_SECONDTrial

A new JACS study found hospitals in the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative showed improvements in complication rates over a 3-year pilot period, highlighting the potential of surgical QI collaboratives to improve patient outcomes.

It worked! Our 21-component strategy to catalyze improvement in surgical quality across 56 Illinois hospitals resulted in
1. Better adherence to best practices
2. Improvement in culture of safety
3. And now - postop outcomes!
So proud of this team & friends across the state!
People experiencing homelessness are at higher risk of pedestrian strike and assault injuries, and are more likely to be admitted to the hospital after injury compared to housed patients with trauma. https://t.co/DcMPIPBXKE @CaseyMSilver@hkanzaria @AnneMStey
Excited to share our new research in @AnnalsofSurgery exploring the association of housing status & types of operations & post-op care utilization with mentors Dr. Wick and @hkanzaria (among others!) from @UCSFSurgery & @ucsfbhhi

Substance use is a major risk factor for injury. Despite recommendations to screen all trauma patients for alcohol and drug use, rates of screening were low and varied significantly between hospitals
