Re: Cement Factory timeline of events up to current Contempt of Court Order

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Governors of Bryden Country School I present a detailed timeline of the legal battle the school has been facing. Thank you for your solidarity and support.

On the 12th of February 2025 the Head was visited at the school by representatives of Shuntai who came with their Environmental consultant to inform us about their proposed Lime and Cement Factory only 497 meters from the school boundary.
A few days after this the School Board engaged with the local councillor and the management of Shuntai requesting that they reconsider their decision to put a Lime and Cement Factory 497 m from the school boundary.

They refused any discussion to consider moving it further away and positioning it so the school would not be as negatively affected by the prevailing South Easterly wind bringing dust and cement particulate over the school and exposing the pupils to pollutants which are known to cause respiratory disease and lung cancer especially in children. However, they insisted they would go ahead.

Thereafter the School engaged with the DA and the RDC and found there was no supporting documentation for Shuntai to operate in this Zone earmarked for Education, with Bryden, Springs of Grace, Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School and University being near the proposed Lime and Cement Factory.

The school engaged an environmental law expert to go through Shuntai’s ESIA report and found the report to have many areas of concern. These were raised with Shuntai at a meeting with EMA, the RDC, the DA, the local police and other Chegutu Stakeholders. However, despite these concerns, work on the site continued, forcing the school to take Shuntai to court.

On the 25th of March the Head, Deputy Head and Board members visited the Shuntai site with Honorable Dr Moyo, Minister of Education and his delegation.
The situation had caught his attention due to the proximity of a Cement and Lime factory to Springs of Grace, Bryden Country School and the Seventh Day Adventist University.

On the same day as our visit the High Court issued an order for Shuntai to “suspend any activities for the establishment, construction and/or implementation of a lime and Cement factory at Plot Number 8 Eastbourne, Chegutu.”

However, Shuntai continued to operate and on the 15th of April managed to wangle an ESIA certificate from EMA suggesting that they had addressed Stakeholder concerns, of which they had not.
The school was compelled to take EMA to court for withholding information pertaining to how they awarded the certificate. EMA, compelled by the court, released the ESIA report – but it was the same report as initially with no amendments or concessions to address Stakeholder concerns.

The school was then compelled to file with the Administrative court and we are waiting for a hearing date with the Minister of Environment which is the ultimate court hearing to bring closure to this issue. However, we remain at the mercy of the Minister to engage with the case.

In the meantime, massive building has continued on site, and the school has been experiencing increased dust influx as well as fumes from burning of noxious material as well as noise of heavy machinery and some blasting mainly experienced on the pool side of the school. Thus, the school was compelled to go back to court to reinforce the first stop order.

On 25 July the Honorable Justice came with his delegation to the Shuntai site to determine for himself if Shuntai was in contempt of the first stop order. His ruling in the current High Court order confirms this.

However, we are not yet out of the woods as Shuntai is determined to proceed even against the ruling of the High Court of Zimbabwe.

We thank you for your ongoing support, because we cannot sustain the fight alone. 43 years ago, the parents came together to build the school and today we are appealing for the parents to stand united to defend the school so that your children’s children will be able to attend Bryden.

Allow me to introduce you to Bilgrade Chimwaza, a remarkable soul with albinism whose story is etched deeply into our hearts. She was only our second skin cancer patient back in 2021, right in the midst of the terrifying waves of COVID-19. Bilgrade reached out to us after a severe and aggressive cancerous growth had developed on her left ear. At the time, she was 28 years old, yet she had no birth certificate a painful reflection of the realities faced by many in the deep rural areas of Magunje, where life is unforgiving and opportunities scarce. I remember clearly the moment our @TNHZ_Trust team reached out, asking me to travel to Harare to meet and assist her with treatment. As I made my way there, something truly beautiful happened strangers became family. A home was found, and within hours, well-wishers donated blankets, pots, food, and clean water. By the time I arrived, the love and kindness of the community had already surrounded her. I took Bilgrade to Damofalls and we began the journey of treatment. But just as hope began to bloom, the country was hit by the second COVID-19 lockdown and to make things worse, Bilgrade contracted the virus, just before her scheduled surgery. We all did. Together, we quarantined for 21 days, supported by the generous hearts at Zwitter. It was a dark time, but we held on. When the quarantine ended, we took her to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where the surgery was finally performed and it was a success. We even helped her obtain her birth certificate a document that represented so much more than just identity it was her right to belong, to exist, to be counted. She returned home, but six months later, tragedy struck again. The cancer returned, fiercer than before. Her health deteriorated rapidly. The wound became septic, she lost a lot of weight, and the fear of losing her grew heavier with each passing day. But we didn’t give up. We reached out to @PGHZIM and once again, heaven responded through the hands of an extraordinary medical team led by Dr. @Waynemanana. She underwent yet another operation, and by God’s grace, it was a success. What followed was eight grueling rounds of chemotherapy. It was excruciating, but she never gave up. She fought with grace and quiet strength. Slowly, the wound healed. And then, one day, she was whole again. Cancer free. Healthy. Home. Today, Bilgrade is thriving joyful, radiant, and living her life like any other young woman should. And yesterday, when she called me just to say thank you… I broke down. Her voice, her gratitude, her life it was too much for the heart to hold back tears. I see God every single day through the work we do. And this, this story is a living testimony of His faithfulness and your kindness. To every donor who heard her call and responded, may the heavens reward you beyond measure.

Woke up to some good news. When Citizens Initiative started work at Masibinta Secondary School in Binga, they had 0% pass rate. We built 2 blocks in 2023 and provided text books with the help of @UNmigration. The pass rate increased to 13% that year. In 2024 it rose to 41.03%. The school is now ranked 7th out of 46 in Binga. Even ahead of Binga High School. This reinforces our belief that investing in decent infrastructure is a sure way to improve academic outcomes in our communities. To those who spared their hard-earned money to help the people of Binga, it was not in vain. You have changed lives!
