#Congratulations to @DrJDonel for your Emerging Leader Award at #AMSA22!
Very well deserved - especially for all the science community building work you're doing! Working for conferences, students, equity...!
And that's just the ones I'm aware of. 👏
New paper led by @DrMollyScott now out OA in @RFBFisheries! Using BRUVs, this study documented pronounced differences in the taxonomic & functional structure of a fish assemblage across a 13 - 71m depth gradient, incl. important fisheries target spp.!

Fingers crossed…“It is important to note that bleached coral is stressed but still alive. If conditions moderate, bleached corals can recover from this stress, as was the case in 2020 when there was very low coral mortality associated with a mass bleaching event”
Reef health update for Friday 25 March 2022: The @gbrmarinepark, together with our partners at @aims_gov_au have completed aerial surveys across the #GreatBarrierReef. Learn more from our @ReefChiefSci: https://t.co/3N9S2exBQI
Reef health update for Friday 18 March 2022: Sea surface temperatures remain above average. Future weather patterns will be critical in determining the severity of coral bleaching across the Marine Park. https://t.co/eV9Tqm0cuj. #ReefAuthority continuing to monitor the situation
Right now, steelmaking relies on coal. But new research has opened the door to green steel - and Australia's Pilbara region is well placed to benefit. @ANUmedia https://t.co/MsIxE2vG5n
@AmsaNq is offering grants to cover @AMSAconf registration costs! Any students and ECRs that have submitted abstracts (due midnight TODAY!) and are active @amsa_marine members from North Queensland are eligible to apply. Details to follow shortly!
2016 bleaching- I honestly thought that would be the moment Australians stood up & fought for the #GreatBarrierReef
2017 bleaching, I felt depressed.
2020 bleaching, I was drafting the #IPCC section on GBR & I just felt numb
2022 bleaching & now I’m just really f&cking angry
AMSA 2022 Abstracts Extended. Due to overwhelming demand from our scientific community, the submission deadline for abstracts and workshop proposals has been extended until Friday 18th March. Submit your work now, no further extensions will be offered!
We were a bit busy doing science yesterday @aims_gov_au, but we didn't forget that it was international #WomenInScience day! So fortunate to work, and be mentored by, so many amazing women in science! What a killer team.
Exciting day: @SarahKwong4 (supervised/assisted by @klesita) taking her first samples of crown-of-thorns seastars of known age for her PhD studies developing genetic methods to determine age of these important coral predators @pratchettlab @aims_gov_au@SeaSim_AIMS
Two new species of ‘butterfly bobtail’ squid have been discovered among museum collections. One species has been named Iridoteuthis merlini in honour of longstanding @austmus affiliate and @UNSW professor, Merlin Crossley! @MerlinCrossley
