Financial advisors proudly call themselves “fee-only”
Then charge a % of your assets
How is that different from a commission?
Both are percentage-based compensation
The more dollars involved
The more the advisor gets paid
Even though I’m Boglehead so very tuned into minimizing financial costs, the more I have thought about it, the more I struggle picturing where the flat-fee, advice-only advisor fits it.
Take my wife and I as just examples. If I passed and my wife called one of these, her eyes would glaze over 10 minutes into that call without a chance in the world of comprehending most of what they’re saying let alone advising her to do.
And if I called one of them, good luck to them for being able to tell me something I don’t already know. Meaning if I were ever going to hire help, it would just be because I don’t want to do it anymore so that means full service.
The challenge is that being under a constant state of “potential need” from clients makes it remarkably hard to ever get away from the business for a vacation, and especially for any kind of “extended” leave… The first thing any advisor needs to do when considering an extended leave is getting past the fear of “abandoning” your clients while you’re gone. https://t.co/Ait0DrhsNk
