Ecuador will be in the next round.

They deserve it. They have been a very good team for a long time.

During the World Cup qualifiers, Ecuador spent only 5.5% of their total match time losing. They conceded just five goals in 18 games, which is an incredible defensive record.

They typically play in a 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, or 3-4-3, with strong positional principles, inverted wingers, Gonzalo Plata as the #10, and Pedro Vite alongside Moisés Caicedo in midfield. Piero Hincapié is usually the player who steps into the left half-space, allowing Ecuador to build and attack in a 3-4-3 with a square midfield.

They have also used a more conventional 4-3-3 build-up against teams defending in a 4-4-2, and they have been very effective at finding the #6, usually Caicedo.

One pattern they execute particularly well is overloading the left side before switching play to Gonzalo Plata, who drifts wide on the right to receive the ball.

The team is also consistently well protected in rest defence, usually with a 3+2 structure. They can defend with either a back four or a back five. Quite often, they shift into a situational back five, with the right winger dropping into the defensive line, a role that John Yeboah has performed very well. This also makes sense because Gonzalo Plata occupies the right half-space in possession, allowing him either to drop out wide to defend when needed or step forward to press the opposition's centre-back, with Ecuador then shifting into a 4-4-2.

Today against Germany, their defensive plan was particularly impressive. They used a very man-oriented approach, aiming to maintain a +1 at the back while allowing only Germany's central centre-back to receive the ball freely. This man-to-man approach suits the profile of their squad, given the number of players who can cover large distances and excel in duels, with Moisés Caicedo standing out in that regard.

It also makes sense because Ecuador are a dangerous transition team, with players such as John Yeboah, Nilson Angulo, Gonzalo Plata, and Enner Valencia capable of carrying the ball forward and/or attacking space.

Overall, this is a team that has performed at a very high level throughout the qualifiers. Their only real weakness has been converting chances into goals, but they deserve a great deal of credit for everything else they have done.
