Reporter: What do you make of Republicans saying that Virginia—
AOC: Wah wah wah.
We have asked Republicans for 10 years to ban partisan gerrymandering. And for 10 years, Republicans have said no. Republicans have fought for partisan gerrymanders across the United States of America. And these are the rules that they have set.
And so if the Republican Party wanted to start this, they did this in North Carolina. They drew out three Democratic members of Congress in North Carolina. They did it in Texas.
What they’re just mad at is that they have been accustomed to a Democratic Party that rolls over, doesn’t fight, and takes everything sitting down. And what they’re mad at right now is that we are here in a new day. And we have been asking the Democratic Party to stand up and fight, and now they did—and now the Republican Party doesn’t like the fact that they are fighting against someone who actually will stand up for the American people.
So if Republicans decide that they would like to revisit a ban on partisan gerrymandering, I welcome them. We have the bill right here to end this all today. But they don’t want to, because they like pursuing and continuing to enact an unfair electoral landscape. And so we have an obligation to defend ourselves.
Regardless of the implications of Rep. Perry and this Committee’s actions, 700,000 D.C. residents, a majority of whom are Black and Brown, are worthy and capable of governing themselves without input from members of Congress who do not represent DC.
#FreeDC#HandsOffDC #DCStatehood
For as much as some members of Congress say the D.C. government is dysfunctional and should be disbanded, it's worth noting that the D.C. government will open and operate normally tomorrow because elected officials can do stuff like, you know, pass annual budgets.
A 🧵: It was a wild day for D.C. in Congress yesterday, where a House committee advanced 14 bills targeting the city – everything from banning traffic cameras to giving Trump the power to appoint the city's elected attorney general.
DC residents pay more federal taxes per capita than any state and fought and died in our nation's wars.
We deserve the right to set our local laws and an independent Attorney General accountable to the people of DC.
I strongly oppose the 13 anti–DC Home Rule bills in Congress.
The thing about this is that cleaning roadways and disposing of trash and plant waste needs to be done regularly. The National Guard won’t be in D.C. forever, so who will clean up federal lands once they leave? It would be NPS, but it had funding and staffing cut.
D.C.'s falling violent crime stats, as seen in a new @washingtonpost graphic
There's no denying the city had a spike in violent crime in 2023, as President Trump was campaigning for president.
There's also no denying that it already has receded.
DC residents – who outnumber Wyoming residents – are fully capable of holding DC officials accountable, just like the people of WY are capable of holding their own elected officials accountable.
DC doesn't need Congress in its local affairs. #HandsOffDC
I’m going to need people to stop saying em dashes and Oxford commas are signs of AI usage. You can pull my favorite punctuation marks from my cold, dead hands!
The thing about congressional control over D.C. is that many members of Congress don't actually understand how D.C.'s government or budget function. Control without knowledge can often produce less-than-ideal outcomes.
So a Republican congressman who calls D.C. a "third-world hellhole" that needs to be cleaned up wants city officials to come beg to him for money that came from residents and had been budgeted to do things like, you know, clean up the city.
HE’S GOT A FAST CAR: @DCAttorneyGen is suing Maryland driver Charles Sanders for 344 unpaid traffic tickets worth *$187,000* in fines. Per the lawsuit, 316 of the tickets were for speeding, 61 of which were for driving more than 30mph over the speed limit.
Prof. Susan Dudley was featured in a @planetmoney segment, discussing how OIRA has worked to ensure executive agency regulations are coordinated across agencies, and what the expansion of its authority might mean for independent agencies and the public.
