Just reflecting on Frank Oates (1875) @cat_poh and @msaldrgeog - he wrote: "Metse-a-tunya" meaning "water sounding" in what he calls an "African language" which is known by contemporary geographers as Victoria Falls. Important hidden histories @GA and @RGS_IBG@DecoloniseGeog 👇
A new hidden histories decolonising project is looking to work with more teachers to reveal marginalised Indigenous voices. Run by Southhampton uni + Gilbert White’s House museum with the RGS. The workshop is taking place on 30th May 2022- if anyone is interested, please DM me!
Also attended an amazing session with @DecoloniseGeog about breaking down boundaries between ‘powerful knowledge’ and ‘everyday knowledges’ to make future curriculums that empower the marginalised. Exciting work! So many critical ideas to help develop our resource! #GAConf22
"When I was kindly invited to write this blog... I wondered what I could add, what I could say about everyday geographies of austerity, when so much has happened." 💔 Thanks @DecoloniseGeog for encouraging me to write about the stories not told ✊
My year 9s interpreted Tanya @tagaq 's cover of 'caribou' as part of their Arctic unit. We had an incredible discussion about how she uses throat singing and the lyrics to express emotions about colonialism and acculturation. Very proud rn!
