⭕️Sigiriya, Sri Lanka is opening for night visits. While this is an amazing initiative by the Tourism Ministry, their timing around full moon nights needs serious reconsideration.

🗓️ Current plan: Opening for five nights monthly (full moon + two days before and after). However, the full moon is actually undermining the best aspect of this promising initiative, as it is the worst time for stargazing or photography.

⭕️ The moon's bright illumination acts as a major source of natural light pollution, significantly impacting the visibility of other night sky objects. Those breathtaking Milky Way photographs are impossible to capture during moonlit nights. Similarly, meteor showers, galaxies, nebulae, and other deep-sky objects become nearly impossible to observe when competing with the moon's brightness.

⭕️ Better approach: Schedule visits during darker moon phases. Imagine watching the Perseids meteor shower from atop an ancient fortress! That's the kind of unique experience we should aim for.

⭕️ Obtaining Dark Sky Place certification for Sigiriya through the International Dark-Sky Association would tap into the high-end astrotourism market, attracting dedicated sky watchers, astro photographers, and eco-conscious travelers who specifically seek out certified Dark Sky locations worldwide.

⭕️ If the Ministry wishes to maintain the five-day monthly schedule, they should consider selecting dates further from the full moon when the sky is naturally darker. These slots could be strategically aligned with special astronomical events like meteor showers or comet appearances, potentially commanding premium prices from enthusiasts. During such events, the combination of Sigiriya's historical majesty and optimal stargazing conditions could create an unparalleled tourism experience.

⭕️ The earned media Sri Lanka could gain from this to attract high-value tourists, particularly through stunning photos shared among the high-value, niche tourist segment, would be enormous.
