The statements made by President Trump on Truth Social regarding the Pope were entirely inappropriate and disrespectful. They don’t contribute at all to a constructive conversation. It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine and the principles that govern the moral life. In regard to the concrete application of those principles, people of good will can and do disagree. I would warmly recommend that serious Catholics within the Trump administration–Secretary Rubio, Vice President Vance, Ambassador Brian Burch, and others–might meet with Vatican officials so that a real dialogue can take place. This is far preferable to the statements on social media.

I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty. All that said, I think the President owes the Pope an apology.

Prince Hisahito, born in 2006, is currently the only male of his generation eligible to inherit Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne. Under the Imperial Household Law of 1947, succession is limited to male descendants in the male line. Emperor Naruhito has no sons, and his brother Prince Akishino—Hisahito’s father—has no other male children, leaving the line of succession much narrower than it has been for most of Japan’s history.

Hisahito is also the first male member of the imperial family to reach adulthood in nearly 40 years, highlighting how restricted the succession has become. If he does not have a son, Japan will eventually face a major succession crisis, meaning the future of a 2,000-year-old institution rests heavily on one individual’s ability to produce an heir.

Forty years ago today, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch. One of the seven on board was my dear friend, Ronald McNair.

As a child in Lake City, South Carolina, Ronald was barred from checking out science books at his segregated local library.

Well, he eventually got his books, became the second Black American to go to space, and today that library now bears his name and serves as an education center honoring his legacy and love of science.
