The last time a Blue Angels jet flew too low, the commanding officer of the squadron stepped down five days later.

That was 2011, at the Lynchburg air show. One maneuver below minimum altitude. Nobody hurt, no aircraft scratched, and the air show's own president said he never noticed anyone flying too low. Cmdr. Dave Koss still aborted the show mid-performance, ordered a safety stand-down, canceled the Naval Academy graduation flyover, and relieved himself of command. His words: "I performed a maneuver that had an unacceptably low minimum altitude."

Today's pass blew chairs and umbrellas off a crowded beach, on video, with millions watching.

So when the Navy says leadership is "reviewing the circumstances," read it literally. These pilots fly 18 inches apart at 400 mph. The system only works if minimums are absolute, and the only way to keep them absolute is to price a harmless violation the same as a fatal one.

In 2011 that price was a career, for a pass the crowd applauded and the organizers missed. This one has 2.4 million witnesses. Someone is going to have to step down.
