With a good book, we melt into it, and it truly becomes an experience instead of a read. We forget our lives and ourselves for a while. #amwriting We experience the book. -Wrtr #Writing
Hedy Lamarr, a famous Hollywood actress from the 1940s, was also a remarkable inventor. She co-invented a frequency-hopping system during World War II to prevent enemies from intercepting torpedoes. This invention laid the groundwork for today's Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth technologies.
Born in Vienna in 1914 as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, she starred in a number of European films before fleeing from her husband, a wealthy Austrian ammunition manufacturer, and moving to Hollywood. There, she became known as Hedy Lamarr and quickly rose to fame as one of the era's most popular and glamorous actresses. But beyond her acting career, Lamarr had a keen interest in science and technology.
Her most notable contribution to technology came during World War II when she learned of the problems with radio-controlled torpedoes. At the time, Allied forces were using radio signals to control their torpedoes, but these signals were susceptible to jamming by enemy forces, which would send the torpedoes off course.
With the aim of creating a more secure system, Lamarr, together with composer George Antheil, came up with the idea of frequency hopping. In their proposed system, the control signal would rapidly switch, or "hop," across multiple frequencies, according to a synchronized pattern known to both the transmitter and receiver but not to the enemy. Even if one frequency were jammed, the system would simply hop to the next, allowing the torpedo to reach its target.
Though the U.S. Navy did not adopt Lamarr and Antheil's technology until the 1960s, the principles behind their frequency-hopping system are widely used today. Variations of frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology form the foundation of modern wireless communication technologies, including Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.
Despite the importance of Lamarr's invention, her contribution was largely overlooked for decades. It was not until 1997, when she and Antheil were honored with the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award, that her work began to receive broader recognition. Later that year, Lamarr also became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention's BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, often dubbed "the Oscars of inventing."
The story of Hedy Lamarr is a testament to the remarkable impact that curious and inventive minds can have, no matter what field they are traditionally associated with. It also underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating the often underappreciated contributions of women to science and technology.
@CalltoActivism In Ireland, nobody pays more than 144 Euro for all meds(monthly cap). All diabetic medicine is free to all. How can such a wealthy country let their citizens suffer like this?
“OKAY, I just saw the most amazing thing today. I was waiting for my prescription at Walgreens, and I noticed this man is picking up his medicines. He was asking how much they are, and starting to get nervous about the price. The total was $170 and the pharmacist asked if he would rather only get one month of his medicines instead of three.
THIS lady next to me, walks up to them and says: NO, he is getting all three months and pays for his bill. I was walking out of there with tears in my eyes, what an amazing woman…”

Happy Pride, America.
This month, in the face of cruel attacks on LGBTQI+ rights across the country, we celebrate the LGBTQI+ Americans who are fiercely and unapologetically fighting for freedom and equality – and reaffirm that their rights are human rights.
"Remember not to put all your writing eggs in one basket. An author isn't made up of just one story or one novel. Authors are made up of many stories and many novels. Write many." -Wrtr #amwriting Be #Writing.
"Writing a story or a novel is like weaving a complex tapestry. Each thread, each part on its own seems simple, but together they create something breathtaking, something entertaining. Something that keeps us rooted to that story or character." #amwriting Be #Writing.
