@BretDevereaux Africa (and really its just North Africa) simply does have the industrial base to sustain its modern arsenal in a long conflict. Europe is far more self-reliant still has 3-4x the production of key resources like steel which is what's going to count after the arms gap is closed
@BretDevereaux I mean the real assumptions that need to be checked are those around the scenario. It seems most people are assuming it's Europe v Africa with no outside intervention, trade, or assistance and under those conditions it's not obvious at all
@zetalyrae@benlandautaylor 2 years ago everyone talked as if they were though, or at least a reified form of knowledge. Does knowledge beyond anyone's understanding cease to be so?
@zetalyrae Different prose styles have their place. Orwell was an absolutely exceptional essayist and sociologist but observant and unencumbered in an essay becomes dry and polemical in a novel
@ProudBavaria I see them aiming too low more often than not. Like a Europe-wide war and the only goals are investment rights and a slice of the Sahara with 200 people
The most tragic thing about Elden Ring is that Leyndell has maybe the best level design in the whole series but you only reach it after 70 hours of open world waypoints and identical micro-dungeons
@SHINTAB_44 we're talking about retro games, this isn't a touch grass moment. the GBA screen is just a normal, old LCD there's not much difference expect everything looks a bit washed out
@KalleMagne@Mechanical_Dodo@slatestarcodex Scott's right in that it's hard for anyone with a modern mindset to write a truly incoherent story. If Celtic myths made sense in their current form then ancient people must've thought about the world in an abstract, symbolic way that's totally lost to us.
@KalleMagne@Mechanical_Dodo@slatestarcodex I sorta disagree; magic dwarves are bizzare content but the myths and also romances in the Mabinogion are bizzare structurally as well. Things just happen in a dreamlike way without any sense of cause and effect or narrative coherence
@PDX_Asteraceae What do you mean about designing the core mechanics around the narrative? I love V3 because the mechanics are deliberately designed from a historical materialist perspective whereas I feel other Paradox games lack a strong thesis about the period they're portraying
