The logic is colder than the photos suggest. Spain's constitution makes the monarch supreme commander of the armed forces, and the military consistently polls as one of the country's most trusted institutions while the crown spent a decade as one of its least. Marching the heir through every branch grafts the credibility of the institution Spaniards trust onto the one they stopped trusting.

The last queen of Spain, Isabella II, was overthrown by her own military in 1868.

The next one just spent three years earning its uniform.
