'Mussoorie and Landour were initially two separate townships. While one can pinpoint the origin of the name ‘Mussoorie’, the genesis of the name ‘Landour’ is still shrouded in mystery and various theories are floating around.... Another theory, promulgated by various historians, is that when the British depot was established here, a number of merchants (mostly Indian) also arrived, most of whom were from a place called Landhaura (near Roorkee). 'The saga of Landour is incomplete without any mention of the clock tower, which has a close emotional connection with the residents of Landour. The clock tower was ‘first’ constructed by the Mussoorie Municipality in 1938–1939.
