It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that the family of Prof Yabezi Banana Abwoli announces his passing, which occurred on Sunday, 31st May 2026.
He served with distinction as a Professor at the School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences, Makerere University.
Prof Banana was a towering figure in the fields of forestry, environmental and wood wood sciences, whose decades of dedicated scholarship enriched the lives of countless students and shaped the academic landscape of Makerere University and beyond.
His unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship has left an enduring legacy that will continue to bear fruit in the careers and minds of all whom he mentored who will carry on his legacy. His Legacy will need always reign.
He was not only a scholar of great depth, but a man of warmth, principle, and deep humanity who wished the best for others— and his passing will be profoundly felt.

The controversy around @ReachDrMuganga, Amb. @adoniaayebare, Sanjay Tanna, and Calvin Echodu’s appointments misses the point entirely.
Yes, the 2009 Citizenship Act bars dual citizens from ministerial roles — but that Act cannot override the Constitution, which only requires a Minister to be “a citizen of Uganda.” Full stop. No extra qualifications.
The Constitution is the supreme law of the land; any statute that contradicts it is automatically void — no court order needed to declare it so.
The doctrine of harmonious interpretation also demands that constitutional provisions be read as a whole, not cherry-picked by a lower statute.
These four appointments represent broadening representation in Uganda’s cabinet — the noise around them is political, not legal.
