Part of emotional labor is this thing that I don’t know if there’s a term for... but I’ll call it social emotional calculus: weighing what you know of the situations and emotional states of those around you in order to determine the best way to interact with them.

@KimCrayton1 I agree 100% with your definition. The demonstrated behaviour is vital and I guess is similar to the ally discussion. I don't get to define my own demonstrated behaviours as good, bad or otherwise, as I benefit from the system by default. I just have to keep doing better.

@KimCrayton1 So I guess the best I can do is move from existing in a steady state of "I'm not racist" to continuous questioning of everything and existing in the reality that the best I can do is keep trying to be better and question and push for change, never assuming it is 'done'.

@KimCrayton1 So true. It reminds me of the whole "You don't get to call yourself an ally..." thing, which I agree with 100%. You don't necessarily get to say you're anti-racist when you're still benefitting from the same system, even in ways you can't recognise yet.

... based on niches and closed circles. And yet, without the existence of these, we end up perpetuating structural inequalities and other problems that don't get air time unless we carve it out for them.

How on earth do we balance these needs? /end random morning thoughts.

What does it mean it be "enough"? Does the validation of others matter? Does something need to be recognised to have worth? How many of our actions are shaped by this particular desire to feel like others see us as worthy?

As we split into so many "tribes" all with our own purposes or flags to rally around, we think even less about the commonalities between us (i.e. Global problems like climate change) and are potentially less equipped to tackle them as we've built a system of recognition...
