One thing I've learned in so much research is that almost everyone is a true believer. What sets them apart from people on the "outside" is how they process feedback.

Take the whole UVU mess for instance which is what started all this. The choice of McMahon is getting blowback from a lot of Republicans.

Is UVU more likely to concede that this entire ideological project which they've worked on for years and received countless millions in grants might not be working to "build bridges" after all, or are they more likely to say, "wow, polarization is a worse problem than we thought" and double down?

Now repeat this process over and over. The range of feedback which is acceptable to you shrinks. You become increasingly ideological and biased towards a set of progressive ideals without even realizing it.

And at some point, your own metrics become the only source of feedback you'll accept. That's exactly what I labeled as "autopoiesis."
