To give you a sense of how little Irish politics has changed since the late 1950s, here's a quote about FF/G from John Messenger's anthropology of Inisheer;

"When asked to account for their anti-government sentiment, the folk of Inis Beag [Inisheer] cite most often the commonplace nepotism and corruption practiced by functionaries, the slight differences between the platforms of the major Irish parties - Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the promises made by politicians which seldom are kept when they achieve office, the misapplication of programmes once implemented, the inadequacy of government services, the burden of increasing taxation and inflation, and “foolish” government projects in Inis Beag, more often than not instituted without consulting the islanders.”

Even 66 years ago people knew that FF/G were a uniparty willing to promise anything - with no intention of delivering - to cling on to power. In fact, the entire quote could have been written today the last part ringing bitterly true in regards to forced IPAS centres.
