Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian just called out what he described as a glaring double standard in the region’s nuclear politics.

His argument: Israel is outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, while Iran — an NPT member subject to IAEA safeguards — faces intense demands for inspections and scrutiny. Israel has a limited IAEA safeguards arrangement, but its alleged nuclear-weapons program is not covered by those safeguards.

Pezeshkian also points to Gaza, arguing that Israel has faced comparatively little international accountability over the enormous civilian toll there, while Iran was attacked during a period in which diplomacy and negotiations were still being pursued.

His broader accusation is that the international system applies one set of rules to Iran and another to Israel: one side is repeatedly demanded to prove what weapons it does or does not possess, while the other operates outside the NPT framework and maintains deliberate nuclear ambiguity.

That, Pezeshkian argues, is not a system based on consistent standards — One country gets inspections. The other gets military backing.

One is pressured to explain its nuclear program. The other remains outside the treaty.

One is sanctioned. The other is armed.

That is the hypocrisy Pezeshkian is putting on the table: Iran is told, “Prove you don’t have the bomb.” Israel, which is outside the NPT and widely believed to have nuclear weapons, is told the opposite.

Netanyahu walked into the United Nations expecting a global audience—and instead got rows of empty seats.

As he took the podium, diplomats from more than 50 countries walked out. An Israeli tally later counted 77 delegations left the chamber when he entered to speak.

Nothing says “greatest ally” quite like delivering a speech to a half-empty room.

Whatever Netanyahu came to say, a significant number of governments had already decided they had no interest in hearing it.
