The "Mogul Mughal Emerald", one of the largest emeralds known in the world. Weighing 217.80 carats, the obverse is engraved with Shi'a invocations in elegant naskh script. Dating back to 1695-1696 AD; belonged to the Royal Mughal Treasury of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb; Red Fort, Delhi (New Delhi), India.

The emerald stone is an impressive 10cm tall and weighs 217.80 carats. This beautiful green stone is thought to have come from the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb (1658-1707 AD) who was the last of the great Mogul rulers who controlled much of India. The Emerald is thought to have been discovered in Colombia by the Spanish conquistadors and cut in India into a rectangular shape with flat sides. One side of the stone is inscribed with Islamic prayers and the other is engraved with opulent flower ornaments.

The Islamic prayer contains the 12 names of Imams in the chronological order in which they succeeded one another. The reverse side reflects the Mogul love of nature with its floral and foliate carved decorations. In 2001 the stone was sold at Christie’s Auction House in London to an anonymous buyer for $2.2 million.

Now, preserved in the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.
