War is never inevitable. Weapons can and must fall silent, for they never solve problems but only intensify them. Those who sow peace will endure throughout history, not those who reap victims. Others are not enemies to hate but human beings with whom to speak.

Dear friends: Today marks the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Jesuits and their companions in El Salvador. On November 16, 1989, Ignacio Ellacuría, SJ; Ignacio Martín-Baró, SJ; Segundo Montes, SJ; Amando López, SJ; Joaquín López y López, SJ; Juan Ramón Moreno Pardo, SJ; and their housekeeper Elba Julia Ramos, together with her daughter Celina Ramos, were murdered by government forces on the campus of the University of Central America (UCA) in San Salvador.
At the time, I was a second-year novice in the Jesuit Novitiate in Jamaica Plain, Mass., and remember hearing the news from another Jesuit novice as I stood in the stairwell of our house before Robert Lentz's icon of "Madre de los Desaparecidos." We had of course read about the Jesuit saints and martyrs, but realizing that it had just happened, the day before, stunned me. Jesuit history, it seemed, was happening now. It filled me with both a sense of horror at the lives brutally lost (not just Jesuits but their friends Elba and Celina) and a profound admiration for my brothers who refused to leave behind the poor and oppressed who were their friends. I could barely believe I was in the same religious order as these men. I felt a sense of shame, unworthiness and pride.
Martyrdom is usually misunderstood, with many thinking it's a kind of "courting" or "celebration" of death. Sometimes martyrdom comes when someone refuses to renounce the faith and is killed as a result. But just as often it comes when a person is unwilling to leave behind those who are struggling, persecuted, oppressed or in danger of death. The Jesuits at the UCA refused to leave those with whom they had sided: the poor and oppressed. Martyrdom really is about life, about defending the lives of others and standing with them when their lives are endangered.
These days the term "social justice" is often mocked. But how could one not want a just society? These martyrs filled me, and still do, with admiration and inspiration. So did the Jesuits from around the world who rushed to take their place at the UCA, including some whom I've come to know.
A few years later, when my Provincial sent me to work with the Jesuit Refugee Service for my regency assignment, I asked to be sent to El Salvador. But JRS needed me more in Kenya, which is where I went. But I've always carried in my heart the example of my Jesuit brothers, and their companions who died accompanying them, who taught us what it means to work for a just society and what it means to follow, as St. Ignatius Loyola says in the Spiritual Exercises, "Christ poor."
