Kenya borrowed KSh95.5 billion in just four months, according to new data from the National Treasury.

The report, tabled before Parliament, reveals that between May 1 and August 31, the government entered into four major loan agreements with a mix of commercial banks, bilateral partners, and multilateral lenders. On average, this amounts to KSh5.9 billion every week - or roughly KSh23.9 billion per month.

A significant portion of these loans was denominated in foreign currencies, including US dollars and euros, leaving the exchequer vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations. The Treasury’s disclosures also outline the interest spreads and commitment fees tied to the loans, underscoring how borrowing costs vary sharply depending on the financier.

These new facilities have pushed Kenya’s public debt closer to the KSh12 trillion threshold, adding strain on taxpayers already battling a high cost of living. Economists and credit rating agencies continue to warn that the country’s growing debt stock, combined with its dependence on short-term domestic borrowing, risks trapping Kenya in an escalating debt-servicing cycle.
