Do you know what I find absurd?
Police have massive budgets, yet gangs still operate, organized crime still profits, and deadly unregulated drugs still flood Vancouver’s streets.
Then somehow, harm reduction services get blamed for the drug crisis.

Think about that.

The people tasked with stopping organized crime can’t stop the supply, while the health workers dealing with the consequences are accused of causing the problem.
Harm reduction didn’t create the toxic drug supply, it’s trying to keep people alive despite it.

So delighted that my dear friend Constable Sukhvinder Singh Sunger of the Vancouver Police Department has made global headlines for a historic appearance at the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland. Sukhvinder became the first turbaned Sikh Drum Major to lead the Vancouver Police Pipe Band. In 2021, Constable Sukhvinder and I made this video together in Victoria, BC. How much healthier would the world be if American industry hadn’t spent the last century making unhealthy things as addictive and profitable as possible?

It’s not just cigarettes, although America industrialised those too. It’s fast food, ultra-processed food, high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats and an entire food system built around convenience and profit rather than actual nutrition.

Then there’s the pharmaceutical industry. OxyContin was aggressively marketed in the US and helped create an opioid crisis that spread far beyond America.

And it didn’t stop at what we eat and swallow. America exported the car-dependent lifestyle, helped normalise a world where you drive everywhere instead of walking, and developed chemicals like PFAS that now turn up in water and people’s blood. Leaded petrol poisoned generations.

Make it addictive, make it convenient, market the hell out of it, then make billions when people get sick.

That’s one hell of a legacy.
