"Warm orange glow of yesteryear", which is hilarious as the awful ugly things basically came and went within my lifetime (also LPS lights are no longer made)
Oxfordshire CC destroyed the ambiance of Old Headington replacing warm orange glow of yesteryear with ugly bright white lamps.
Not to be outdone, OCC has now replaced the BK wooden zip wire with hideous scaffolding as it "lasts longer" (ODS)
Consultation? Not for peasants.
@arthur_spirling I feel shamefully grateful I retired a few years ago; like a handloom weaver in 1790 who managed to make some dosh, marry the kids off well and move in with the richest one JUST before power looms crushed the industry.
The 10-year database architecture cycle:
2015: SQL is obsolete. Schemas are too rigid. Put everything in NoSQL JSON documents.
2018: Wait, we need to join users and orders. Let's write a 400-line nested loop in JavaScript to join them in RAM.
2021: Wait, if the server crashes halfway through the loop, we lose money. We need ACID transactions.
2026: Quietly puts everything back in PostgreSQL and never speaks of it again.
at the end of the day this comes back to my old bit about the difference between a business lobby and a wealth lobby; they had so little contact with any business other than billionaire hangers-on the only possible contacts they could offer would be their own self-dealing
@bouledenerfs_ Me too, the primary school headmaster would tell us in assembly that it was terrible and American (penny for the guy was somehow not mentioned)
@thomasforth It is "funny" that to start with we had local and regional radio but then the national antibodies killed it off. The Regional Programme was clobbered at the start of WW2 and never came back
@jerryalderson I think that if the BBC are doing so little in the English Midlands that it doesn't make sense to keep doing the Archers there that speaks to a much deeper problem that needs addressing, and then your argument would go away.
