In the short term, a tourism tax almost certainly reduces tourism. Must do. I doubt building a model of it is that useful. Let's just try it and measure it
In the medium term, the investment and spending that a tourist tax raises the money for probably usually increases tourism.

Thankfully, as long as we can keep data centre away from central government, it shouldn't matter. Leeds City Council backs data centres. So does our Mayor. If we can protect local planning powers, Richard Burgon's degrowth views shouldn't matter. 🤞

The sad irony of this is:

- the Leeds data centre is estimated to create 1,000+ jobs across the region
- its water needs are roughly equivalent to 5 moderately busy car washes
- and... it will use rainwater gathering, so a decent chunk of water needs are covered anyway

Objecting to it essentially makes the region poorer, for no real gain.

@discoplomacy But more formally, I think IPPR North, Northern Powerhouse Partnership, most of the Northern Mayors offices, most of Number 10 North, lots of people connected to the Scottish Government etc... would be helpful. The first place I'd call would be the Mayor of North Yorkshire.

@MartinDDean Certainly the most beautiful. And yes, exactly. As long as it isn't pushed on us from somewhere else I can't imagine Leeds rejecting some investment in what is currently, pretty close to literally, a dump.
