On September 17, 1987, Thomas “Hitman” Hearns made boxing history when he defeated Juan Domingo Roldán to win the vacant WBC middleweight championship. With that victory, Hearns became the first boxer in history to win recognized world titles in five different weight divisions, an extraordinary achievement in a sport where moving up in weight often means facing naturally larger and stronger opponents.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1958 and raised in Detroit, Hearns developed into one of the most feared punchers of his generation under legendary trainer Emanuel Steward at Detroit’s Kronk Gym. Standing unusually tall for the divisions in which he began his career, Hearns combined a long reach with tremendous punching power. His devastating right hand earned him the nickname “The Hitman,” and by 1980 he had captured his first world championship after stopping José Pipino Cuevas for the WBA welterweight title.

Hearns went on to win championships at junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight, becoming one of boxing’s great multi-division champions. Along the way, he shared the ring with some of the greatest fighters of his era, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Durán and Marvin Hagler. His 1985 fight with Hagler, remembered simply as “The War,” lasted less than eight minutes but became one of the most celebrated fights in boxing history because of its relentless action.

His career included unforgettable victories as well. In 1984, Hearns knocked out Roberto Durán in the second round with a crushing right hand, becoming the first fighter to knock Durán out. Three years later, the victory over Roldán secured Hearns' fifth divisional world championship and a place in boxing history that no fighter before him had reached.

Hearns continued competing for years afterward and eventually won titles across six weight divisions during his long career. His combination of speed, reach, skill and frightening punching power made him one of the defining fighters of the 1980s and one of the greatest Black American boxers in the history of the sport.

SUDAN WAR UPDATE: Sudan is sliding toward partition.

The army, led by Abdel Fattah al Burhan and supported by Muslim Brotherhood aligned militias, controls Khartoum and most of northern, eastern and central Sudan. The RSF, led by Hemedti, controls most of Darfur and operates a parallel government from Nyala.

Sudan is especially important because it sits along more than 800 kilometers of Red Sea coastline, overlooking the shipping route connecting the Suez Canal with Bab el Mandeb and the Indian Ocean.

Kordofan is now the decisive front. The army (SAF) has recently advanced in North Kordofan, while the RSF still holds positions farther west and uses drones to strike deep inside government territory.

At least 59,000 people have been killed, although the real toll is likely far higher. Around 13 million have been displaced, while parts of Darfur and Kordofan face famine.

Egypt, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey support the SAF. The RSF has been reported to receive support through networks linked to the UAE, Chad and Libya. The UAE denies arming it.

Saudi Arabia wants to host a national dialogue, frustrating Burhan, who wants the process held inside Sudan under his control. Meanwhile, the U.S. is pushing to expand the Darfur arms embargo across the entire country, covering the RSF and SAF, combat drones and loitering munitions.

Neither side is close to total victory. The immediate danger is a permanent division between an army controlled east and an RSF controlled west.

clayton christensen spent his career studying why successful companies collapse. in his final class, he asked students to apply the theory to themselves: if you keep allocating your time the same way, what life are you actually building?

he had already seen the answer in his own harvard mba class. everyone looked successful at the fifth reunion; by the 10th, 15th, 20th, and 25th, many were unhappy, divorced, and living far from their children.

work shows you the score immediately. close a sale, ship a product, finish a presentation, earn a promotion, get paid.

an hour with your child may produce nothing you can measure today; it may take 20 years to understand what that hour built. so the next free hour goes back to work, one rational decision at a time.

this is how people build lives they never planned: through hundreds of right decisions that lead in the wrong direction, day after day.

money, titles, and headcount are easy to count. christensen believed a life should be measured by the people who became better because you were there.
