Anecdotal reports of Irish passports being rejected as valid ID for some voters today.
⭐This is incorrect. Irish citizens can vote in the general election and an Irish passport IS valid, so is an Irish Driving Licence.

I am privileged to work on large datasets of women and girls’ experiences of abuse, violence and crime against them.
Here’s what I know from looking at over 30,000 women and girls’ experiences in the last 4 years:
🧮 There is absolutely no pattern that I can see in who is targeted and abused, and who isn’t. Every correlational test to explore age, income, ethnicity, disability, ACE score etc comes up with nothing. For me, all this does is confirm that VAWG doesn’t discriminate, and we’ve all been led to believe that only certain women and girls are vulnerable and targeted by perps.
🧮 Sexuality is changing, a LOT. In the adult samples I have, around 11% of women report being lesbian or bisexual, versus around 40% of girls aged under 18. The younger the woman/girl, the more likely she is to be lesbian or bisexual.
🧮 Girls under 18 are reporting more violence against them than the adult women who have been alive longer than them.
🧮 VAWG is an extremely common experience, but it does seem to vary around the UK. In some areas, there can be up to 15% more VAWG than others.
🧮 Some common, recurring findings across the samples are that rape by coercion or manipulation is common (around a third), being accused of being mentally ill is very common (around 1 in 2), being stalked is common (just over a third), receiving non-consensual dick pics is very common (over two thirds) and threats to kill are common (just over a third). This is just a fraction of what we measure.
🧮 Girls under 18 are much more likely to report female perps including girlfriends, female friends, female exes etc. They are most likely to report coercive control by female perps but they are also more likely to report physical violence by female perps than adult women (around 40% of perps reported are female in the U18 data, versus around 20% in the O18 data).
🧮 In adult women, the most likely perpetrators of all forms of violence are husbands, boyfriends, male friends, and male strangers.
🧮 But in the U18 samples we have collected, the most likely perpetrators male strangers, then boyfriends, male friends, and then mum and dad. In two of our U18 samples (N=820), the most common perp of sexual violence reported by girls was male strangers, which is completely different from the adult samples.
🧮 When it comes to reporting, adult women are more likely to report than teen girls. Between 10-28% of adult women say they reported what happened to them to the police.
When teen girls were asked the same, only 1-4% say they reported what happened to them to police.
🧮 Finally, and because I could go on forever, in BOTH girls and women, in a sample of over 30,000, the most common reason they gave for not reporting abuse or rape to police was ‘I didn’t know it was a crime’ with over 50% of adult women and girls choosing this option.
We’ve been really lucky to work with police forces, schools, universities, companies, charities, and thousands of individual women over the last few years, and we have been able to hone our studies and methodology to be higher and higher quality as time has moved on.
I hope to keep adding to this dataset and some others we are working on, so we can explore such valuable insights. Ultimately though, as a psychologist and researcher with access to one of the biggest sets of self-reported VAWG data, I would mostly like to use it to build free resources, understand what women and girls need across my lifespan and my career, and so I can invest in the right things.
I want to be able to use the data to help women and girls realise that it was never their fault, that they did nothing to deserve or bring the abuse on themselves, and that VAWG is extremely common - it’s not a flaw of themselves, and it is not about them as a person.
Thank you for reading!
