The Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, and An Garda Síochána need to be very clear with the public about the stabbing on O’Connell Street over the weekend.
A man was stabbed in broad daylight on one of the busiest streets in the country. Gardaí have arrested a man and the investigation is ongoing.
The public deserves to know what provoked this attack and whether there was any religious, ideological or extremist motivation behind it. If Gardaí establish that this was an Islamist-motivated attack, they must say so clearly. Equally, if it was not, that should also be made clear.
With Christmas approaching and thousands of people travelling into Dublin city centre to shop, work and go about their daily lives, people have every right to expect to feel safe on O’Connell Street.
Once the facts are established, Jim O’Callaghan and An Garda Síochána need to give the Irish public a clear and transparent account of what happened and why.
There can be no speculation, but there can also be no hiding from the facts once they are known.

He is paid to teach students and analyse European politics, yet his response to an election result he dislikes is to shout “fascist” and blame “Russian bots.”

The facts speak for themselves.

The AfD’s projected 44.5% represents its strongest-ever performance in a German regional election more than double the 20.8% it received in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU has collapsed from 37.1% to approximately 18.5%.

A political realignment of that magnitude cannot honestly be explained away as the work of bots. Many Germans clearly believe their government has ignored legitimate concerns about mass immigration, integration, crime and public safety and they are voting for change.

A serious academic would examine why so many voters have abandoned the political establishment. Branding them fascists is not scholarship; it is ideological sloganeering dressed in academic credentials.

Perhaps it is O’Brennan’s worldview that should be cast aside as a relic of the old establishment an establishment that lectures, labels and condemns ordinary voters instead of listening to them.

Perhaps this result will also give the people of Ireland hope that they, too, can demand change at the ballot box.
