Yesterday the Governor of Mountjoy Prison Eddie Mullins, together with his staff laid a wreath at the Mountjoy Prison memorial garden in memory of Rory O'Connor, Liam Mellows, Joe McKelvey, and Richard Barrett who were executed there on 8th December 1922
Today, #100yearsago Dick Barrett , alongside Joe McKelvey, Rory O’Connor and Liam Mellows were executed in reprisal for the death of Seán Hales despite playing no part in it. On Sunday last the @centenary2022 Commemoration was held for Dick at his graveside in Ahiohill.

Liam Mellows, Rory O'Connor, Dick Barrett and Joe McKelvey were executed #OTD 8 December 1922 in Mountjoy Prison in reprisal for the killing of Seán Hales T.D. by republican forces the previous day. All four were captured following the fall of the Four Courts in June 1922. 1/4
Reporting on the executions, the Irish Examiner said: “It is a sad comment upon the tragic sequence of events that representative Irishmen…should be driven to impose upon their own countrymen penalties of a severity more dreadful than those of an outside governing authority.”

On Saturday 3rd December a special mass will also be celebrated by Mons Kevin O'Callaghan the evening prior in the Church of the Assumption Ahiohill at 5pm. Music by The Bandon Concert Band.
Relatives and Committee members of @centenary2022 unveiled a plaque and a tree today on the grounds of @gurranejuniors National School where Dick was Principal from 1915. Thank you to the pupils and staff for their welcome and collaborating on this fitting tribute to Dick.
