@_renbai@Xeer Coldcard's software was also open source, nobody noticed it was using low-entropy randomness... how would an average joe be able to evaluate whether a so-called bip39 handled entropy entirely correctly and bug-free? They can't, most likely you can't either
@chrislakin@seventhmeal In Jan 2000, long bond yield was above 6.6%. Using 3-mo t-bills as comparison is weak sauce. You'd collect $33,000 every 6 months (which can be reinvested in bonds or switch to equities). $1,980,000 + reinvestment gains + your original $1MM back Jan 2030, all with zero risk.
@bajolacurva@ryanbrewer When the Bravo channel debuted, it was supposed to bring fine arts to everyone - opera, classical music, staged theater, international film. Now all it shows is Real Housewives and other trash reality tv.
@edzitron Open, free models will eventually win out, just like with databases. Yes enterprises in older industries pay a lot to use Oracle, SQL Server, DB/2 etc but every innovator since late 90s is on some free/open DB. There's money in the enterprise space of course but yes $Bs not $Ts
@tipinfos@omgsidewalks Yes. Plus - house-flipping, landlording, and AirBnb'ing would be severely lessened by strict down-payment requirements. The whole business model is generating cash flow w/o tying up a big chunk of cash. Taking tons of units meant for families off the market, tightening supply.
@ShawnPedrick@Kbubs34 Back in high school I was one of those lunatics... Johnny Campbell! William O'Donnell! Ben Webster! "The Cat Man" Catello Manzi! 🐎
@VitalVegas I agree most rec players wont feel the difference in a single, short session. Still, saying "just 2%" is misleading, just like a 6% mortgage is not "just 2%" different than a 4% mortgage - the difference, measured in dollars, is pretty huge.
@VitalVegas@Winmwiotf Is a 97% payback video poker machine 2% different than a 99% payback? No, you are losing *triple* the amount (theoretically, or in the long run). Play 10,000 hands at $5 x 5 coins, that's $2500 expected loss or $7500 - your choice. I'm guessing most people would give a shit.
@MeltzVegas Caesars AC did $292MM gaming revenue in 2018, the year Hard Rock AC opened. 2025? Only $232MM. Harrahs AC fell from $402 to $285. Las Vegas is a bigger market w/ many more players, one new entrant won't have as big an impact - but history says Caesars "plans" are rarely effective
@freddjohns@m6drop 2 of the 3 (Taj and Castle) are still up and running - with new ownership and names, of course. These Primm casinos are truly shutting down.
@VegasMike In the late 90's I would start my Las Vegas trips by driving straight from McCarran to Buffalo Bill's for cheap blackjack, a few roller coaster rides, ribs at Tony Roma's, a $40 room and a round of golf at Primm Valley in the morning. It was glorious.
