Do you know that sediments deposited by towering glaciers has made a lasting impact on how we design and build earth structures in the oil sands today? If you want to know more, look no further than this exciting talk by Scott Martens https://t.co/sYPTgSJBBi
This is terrible.
[For people not familiar with 'quick clay', it's a type of highly unstable glaciomarine sediment that liquefies when stress is applied. It's a major issue in Canada too, especially in Quebec.]
I end the working week with this animation: simulation of a cd test of an initially normally consolidated clay using the Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model. MCC is illustrative to explain hardening plasticity, associated flow & Critical State Soil Mechanics. #AnimatingSoilModels
ATTENTION STUDENTS: The Tailings & Mine Waste Committee is accepting applications for BA, MA, or PhD student scholarships to attend #TMW2020. Scholarships will provide students free registration to the virtual conference. Applications due: Nov. 9 by 5PM. https://t.co/lvaSy59LI8
Registration is open for one of my favorite conferences this time of the year: Tailings and Mine Waste 2020 (virtual event this year due to COVID but no less!). Early bird registration deadline is Nov 8, 2020. Hope to see many familiar faces there. @TMWConference
I had loads of fun participating in the consolidation round-robin together with 26 labs worldwide. It never hurts for our mine waste lab to receive a tint of red from time to time. Many thanks also go to @ahlamgeoenv , Kwaku and Louis for sound advices and facilitating logistics.
Despite challenges of COVID-19, we are proud to carry on this time-honored tradition: 2020-21 Graduate Seminar Series at UAlberta. Our first speaker is Dr. Albert Liu who recently joined as an Assistant Professor. To register for the online seminar, visit https://t.co/TZMvLabBAu
If you teach theoretical/advanced geomechanics or constitutive modeling for soils you will immediately know you need this to address visual learners & beyond! If you don't teach those particular topics, still PUH-LEASE support @IGT_Medicus cause it's a superbly needed project.
BC Hydro has completed the two river diversion tunnels at #SiteC. Starting later this year, they’ll be used to reroute the Peace River, allowing construction of the earthfill dam to begin @prhydropartners Read more ➡️ https://t.co/ZKms9M40Kg
Announcing another fantastic keynote at the 2020 @TMWConference. Hear from Professor David Williams, Director of the Geotechnical Engineering Centre at The University of Queensland, November 15-18. Learn more at https://t.co/ejipBd4wqu #Mining#Conference#Tailings @UQ_EAIT
I highly encourage anyone in the tailings world to attend this workshop. One can hardly be motivated without understanding the big picture, especially for young engineers who are often entrenched in field work and numerical models. #tailings

@JessicaLTami same story but in a different discipline....it really depends on the reviewer and the competition. If you get someone who also happens to have low grades during their undergrad, then they may be more forgiving. Or if the competition is cut-throat, they really have no choice.
@beccamaysmith I am in the same boat...it went from straight-up reject last yr to alternate this yr with the same project...keep up the good work and re-apply !
The coffee experiment makes coming to the lab one of the best daily routines this semester. I will be interested to see the final results and how the unsaturated-saturated flow mechanism is communicated through this creative medium. #mining#reclamation#tailings#geotechnical
The second edition of the Landform Design Quarterly is out. Read about our efforts to educate while respecting social distancing, compile a comprehensive case study catalogue, and conduct the great geotechnical coffee experiment. https://t.co/mOtMTOT2aV
