@plexuszh As far as I know, there isn’t a story behind. The characte 皇 is just a matter of character chiice. There were several other ways to write it in the history, like 苍黄 仓惶

Although I really don't like the Chinese who use English name to make friends with non-Chinese people, but it seems sometimes you don't have a choice... like
A Chinese girl whose name is 诗婷(shī tíng) definitely needs an English name when she goes to an English speaking country.

@goPlayerJuggler It could be that the rising tone sounds a bit aggressive? Or this was the most common way to answer phone 20 years ago when not many people have their own phones?

Just saw this on Weibo and it's so true!!
Q: How to tell if somebody is a mid-aged or a young person?
A: If they say 喂(wéi) ,the second tone, when answering the phone, they're still young. If they use 喂(wèi), the fourth tone, they're definitely mid-aged uncles or aunts.

@goPlayerJuggler I first saw this on Weibo and reposted it here. Nobody knows why, but surprisingly nearly all of the comments recognise this difference. Maybe there is a sociolinguistic factor behind the way of answering phone.

Recently, a meme featuring Donald Duck has become quite popular on Weibo. Their texts substitute all instances of 呀(ya), an exclamative particle, with 鸭(yā) duck. Reading them out loud sounds exactly the same, except the latter sounds funnier.
