@SFMTA_Muni whatโs causing the delay at St Francis Circle? Multiple outbound trains backed up there. Signals arenโt allowing them thru intersection.
@jemersmith In any event, isn't it better for people to move to housing in mild, already urbanized areas of the coast rather than to exurban sprawl in hot, dry areas?
@jemersmith Too bad the Coastal Commission doesn't take induced demand into account when reviewing road expansion projects. Just this March, the Commission uncritically accepted claims that adding lanes to a road thru wetlands & other sensitive habitat would solve traffic congestion there.
@SFMTA_Muni Hope nobody was hurt. The way cars race from Portola and Woodside onto O'Shaughnessy makes crashes like this here very predictable. SFMTA should redesign intersection to discourage fast driving, esp. by eliminating the double-left turn from Portola onto O'Shaughnessy.
Next, an unnamed person asks: "Do you think our housing crisis just fell out of a coconut tree? No! It exists in the context of all that came before it." Lots of laughs in the room. Urges support for the rezoning.
@solenodon That's true in some urban areas, but in many urban areas, especially in southern California, the coastal zone is quite a bit wider than a few blocks.
Here's an op-ed I wrote on reforming the Coastal Act:
Reforming California's landmark coastal law can restore balance between housing and environment https://t.co/oy6q7DV7NW
.@GavinNewsomโs proposed budget for California cuts our most climate friendly transportation program in favor of more money for highways, our least climate friendly program.
I wrote an op ed about how wrong headed this is:

@JesseGabrielCA
Great view from Hurricane Ridge bus stop despite the clouds. @ClallamTransit@OlympicNP Only $2 for roundtrip from Port Angeles WA to the heart of Olympic National Park.
@sbjinsfo @about_dave @louismirante That's correct. None of the City of LA is subject to a fully certified LCP. The same is true for Santa Monica and some smaller cities such as Monterey, Goleta, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Seal Beach, San Clemente, and Solana Beach.
It's Friday afternoon, can I be real for a sec about the realities of transit advocacy?
It's ridiculously underresourced, given the benefits of what we do. Philanthropy largely ignores transit, while pouring billions into causes that rely off of quality transit๐งต.
@AaronGuhreen @louismirante @TheCACoast It's not located within the appealable area of the coastal zone and it's not a public works or energy project. (Simplifying somewhat, the appealable area is generally the area that's seaward of the first public road or within 100' of wetlands or a stream.)
@AaronGuhreen @louismirante @TheCACoast This project's actually not appealable to the Coastal Commission, so the Commission won't have any say in whether it's ultimately approved. That said, this ongoing fiasco demonstrates the need to fix the law regarding density bonus projects in the coastal zone.
@josefow@SFBART@SFBayFerry I really don't get the rationale for ferry service to the Berkeley pier. The ferry terminal wouldn't be close to any destinations and has infrequent bus service, so it'd just be an expensive park & ride lot that undercuts other existing transit services.
@IDoTheThinking Some streets in Golden Gate Park and weekends on part of the Great Highway. That said, it's quite something to see car drivers rage about a handful of restrictions on a minute fraction of the city's streets.
@skip_sf @Jerold_Chinn I think Supervisor Melgar actually does care about improving Muni service there, but she's been pounded for supporting SFMTA's proposal. I really don't think the merchants care about Muni. I think they'd be perfectly happy if it just went away.
@Jerold_Chinn Notably, the issues to be addressed don't include improving the speed, reliability, convenience, or efficiency of Muni service through West Portal.
@Jerold_Chinn Too bad, but not surprising, that there's no requirement for the "Welcoming" committee to include anyone who regularly rides through West Portal and experiences the delays and unreliability that the current set up causes.
