Just discovered that The “What is Money?” Show is Socratically inspired in a deep way:
As Socrates stated almost 2,500 years ago, “The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.” This one phrase establishes the single most important aspect of study, teaching, self-growth, and acquiring effective knowledge.
At first I thought this was AI, but it turned out to be a real castle in Russia, and the crazy part is that construction only began in 2007.
Garibaldi Castle, despite being a modern project, was designed in the spirit of medieval architecture, blending Renaissance and Victorian influences to create a fantastical, old-world aesthetic.
While going through my archive to find some inspiration, I stumbled upon this building in Cayalà by Léon Krier.
Very simple, clear, moderately ornated.
A commensurate beauty.
Oh boy what a loss, I miss him.
New old streets in Dresden. The city’s recreation of its traditional heart is utterly beyond the comprehension or imagination of most British planners, developers, architects or “heritage experts” & yet is profoundly popular, sustainable. It is the people who made this happen.
A walkable neighborhood, corner stores, missing-middle homes, and tree-lined streets aren’t radical ideas.

Another cool photo of one of our buildings at Selah (a walkable neighborhood).

Beauty doesn’t have to be complicated.
Making North American cities places *for the complete life cycle* (including having kids) means rethinking how we plan city blocks. Best way to do houses with yards while maintaining density and commercial integration is courtyard blocks.
Tuscanic, the simplest order, is my favorite because it dignifies with modesty and, if we want, minimalism, in a wider range of contexts than other orders.
Traditional Architecture is humanistic because it puts the Human at the center, both as generator and receiver of it.
In the age of transhumanism, siding with Tradition is a precise choice of will.
