Will we win the league again any time soon and be able to sustain being at the top or win another UCL with the way Clearlake’s model is? There’s still plenty of doubt.
But when I look at the pure facts like statistics and then combine it with background context, I find myself increasingly backing Maresca to lead the journey.
Chelsea are 2nd in the league despite :
- Palmer playing one lot of 90 minutes in the league out of 12 games.
- Coaching the youngest squad in the league and all the inconsistencies that arrive from that while also being expected to deliver results every game to avoid a fan crisis.
- Our best centre back Colwill out for the whole season and not getting the profile in that he asked for publicly.
- No consistent pairing at the back to choose from due to injuries / limited ceiling of some options.
- Delap being out for two months and not having any proper, proven striker in the first place.
- Inconsistent / inexperienced / very young wingers.
- Both true #6 options Lavia and Essugo injured.
- No “been there done it” player who can be an extra manager and guide in a sense, especially with so many young players.
- Having to deal with inconsistent patterns in training like Enzo, Caicedo, JP not training all the time due to long term injuries from our own success in the Club World Cup and last season.
- Having to balance and buy into the culture of a ‘Chelsea’ manager to try and get the home fans behind him (running down the touchline, building a connection etc, while also staying grounded).
And the next time a fan tells you his Football is ‘boring’, tell them that Chelsea have the third most goals scored in the league, only 1 behind joint first.
Onto a big week. Up the Chels.
