Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Heavenly Father, we lift up the people of Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa strikes their island. Please place Your hand of protection over every family, home, and community. Calm the winds, lessen the destruction, and bring peace to fearful hearts. Strengthen first responders and leaders as they serve others, and remind everyone that even in the storm, You are their refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
From Fr. Mike’s homily today:
“Comfort has become the god of our generation.
If comfort is our god, then we end up missing God. We end up missing God’s will in our lives.
And the goal of our lives is God’s will. The obstacle is that we’re living in captivity to comfort. We’re unwilling to be uncomfortable.
We need to be willing to pursue God’s will and have absolutely no fear of discomfort.
If we’re bound by a love of comfort, we’ll never be able to love anything else.”
Evil is personal. Demons are real.
They are not vague forces or bad feelings; they are intelligent beings, and they hate you.
All discussion of mass violence is empty if it does not confront this reality head-on.
If you are reluctant to talk about evil and need a pep talk, consult the stirring final chapter of St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:
"For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
If you have ever been tempted by the deliberate efforts of another human person, you can at least have a guess at how vastly more skilled demons are. They need not bother with your senses. They can go straight to your imagination.
It would be naïve to dismiss the massacres that are now so much a part of our news cycle as merely the actions of racists or the mentally afflicted.
For very good reason the Church exhorts us to make it a fair fight by seeking the help of St. Michael and his angels to defend us in spiritual combat. For very good reason the Church warns us to avoid the occult.
So if you want to do something about mass violence, avail yourself with abandon of the many means of grace the Church has given us: sacramentals like scapulars, miraculous medals, and holy water; devotions like consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; and above all, avail yourself regularly of those means of grace instituted by Our Lord himself: daily Communion and frequent confession.
Evil is personal. Demons are real.
Stay close to Jesus; he wins.
As a priest, I’ve heard the gravest confessions—even murder. Hear this: Christ was on the Cross for you. No matter your sin, His mercy is greater. Any voice that says you are beyond redemption is the voice of Satan. Trust His forgiveness.
We are heartbroken to hear of this morning’s shooting at Annunciation Catholic Parish in Minneapolis. Please join us in praying for the victims who were injured and lost their lives in this horrific act of evil, as well as for their families, the students, the faculty, and the school community.
Lord, have mercy.
Friends, as the sinless one and the perfect disciple, Mary is assumed—body and soul—into the dimension of God. She is not so much somewhere else as somehow else, and intercedes and prays for us in her heavenly state.
Today, let us contemplate Mary’s critical role in salvation history, culminating in her bodily Assumption, which, like the Ascension of Jesus, draws us toward a higher world.
I didn’t meet Jesus at an altar.
I didn’t meet Him with my hands raised or my life cleaned up.
I met Him when I was drunk.
Angry.
Alone.
Done.
I didn’t come running to Him.
He came looking for me.
He walked straight into the wreckage I had made of my life.
He found me in the silence, in the shame, in the bottle, in the dark.
And He said, “I still want you.”
That’s who He is.
The Good Shepherd who leaves the 99 for the one who doesn’t even want to be found.
The One who steps over the broken pieces and sits down beside you until you’re strong enough to stand again.
He didn’t wait for me to change.
He didn’t demand I be better.
He just loved me right there in the mess.
And He never left.
📖 “I will search for the lost and bring back the strays.
I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.”
—Ezekiel 34: 16
Where did Jesus first meet you?
Or maybe… are you still in the dark, wondering if He would come for someone like you?
He would.
He will.
He is.
I love you all because He loved me first.
