Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much.

It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year.

If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them.

This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching.

And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha.

Anyway, let's let Coach Deggs say that, and so much more, in his own words. Write it down now, they look like a team to watch in the Sun Belt for 2027.

In 1986, I first stepped onto the campus of the University of Southwestern Louisiana for a football game against Oklahoma State. Even then, I knew this university stood for something special — hard work, pride, loyalty, family and THE cU(S)Lture
What I could never have imagined at that time was the incredible journey ahead as a student athlete, coach, and administrator.
Over the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of working with nearly 4,000 student-athletes, 355 Ragin Cajun Football games on the sideline and coaches' box, 143 coaches, 6 head coaches, 4 athletic directors, 3 university presidents, and countless support staff members who make this operation run every day. With very few exceptions, all of these individuals shared one thing in common: a deep love for this university and everything it represents. Serving this university and this football program has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
This place has given me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a purpose far greater than myself. I have always believed in Dr. Authement’s “Walk of Honor” philosophy — that each of us leaves a part of ourselves behind to help strengthen the university for future generations. I hope I’ve done that during my time here.
After much reflection, regarding recent conclusions and developments within the university administration I have made the decision to retire from the University of Louisiana effective June 30, 2026. Until then, I remain fully committed to our players, our staff, and this program that means so much to all of us.
Thank you to every player, coach, colleague, donor, alumnus, and fan who has been part of this journey. Your support, trust, and friendship have meant more than words can express. I ask that you take this time especially to support your Ragin Cajun Football program they need you now more than ever. There are very few men like your head football coach... Coach Des is a great coach and a better man and deserves your unwavering support in whatever form that takes. Please get on board!
I will always be proud to call myself a Ragin’ Cajun.
