Looking back: India recorded 13,892 student suicides in 2023 — highest in at least a decade, about 8% of all suicides.
Roughly 38 a day. One every 38 minutes. The count is about 72% higher than in 2014.
This can't be pinned on exam pressure alone but it demands a hard look at academic stress, family expectation and access to mental-health care.

As the "cockroach" ‌movement continues, let's look at the numbers behind students' anger.
India's education-spend down from 2.9% in FY20 to 2.7% of GDP in FY26 against 6% target set by National Education Policy 2020. It trails lower-middle-income country average of 3.4% & South Asia regional average of 2.9%.
Health spend at 1.8% in FY26, far lower than 2.5% of GDP target set at National Health Policy 2017.
India's per-capita public health spending is among the world's lowest — less than Bhutan & Sri Lanka & far behind other BRICS nations.
India ranks 130 out of 193 countries on the UN Human Development Index which combines health, education & income. India sits in the "medium human development" category with a value of 0.685. China (78th), Sri Lanka (89th) and Bhutan (125th) rank above India; Bangladesh is tied at 130th.

The results of the recent state elections have been dramatic by any measure.

But for me, this image will remain the most unforgettable outcome of the elections.

When most people plan a holiday in India, the usual suspects come up: Goa, Himachal, Rajasthan.

Jharkhand rarely features in that conversation.

I plead guilty of that too.

And then I bumped into these striking photos posted by @IndiaAesthetica about Meghahatuburu, a hill station in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district, renowned as the "Hill of Clouds" due to its high altitude.

Sitting 4,300 feet above sea level in the heart of the Saranda forest of 700 hills, it offers a sunset point, forest waterfalls, and a landscape that has remained largely untouched.

Bare-bones tourist infrastructure. Very few resorts, many guesthouses.

I did some more checking about Jharkhand and found it has Netarhat’s famous sunrises, Betla National Park, the sacred Jyotirlinga at Deoghar, the waterfalls around Ranchi, and the ancient Saranda forest itself.

Somehow, it still gets overlooked.

Jharkhand has much to offer the discerning traveller. It simply hasn’t shouted about it.

Located in Charaideo district of Assam, the Moidams are ancient burial mounds of Ahom kings, queens, and nobles. Though such mounds are found across Upper Assam, Charaideo, once the Ahom capital, served as the main royal burial ground. For 600 years (from the 13th to the 19th centuries CE), the Ahom kingdom built these burial mounds as per their belief to pay homage to their dead.

The word Moidam comes from the Tai-Ahom phrase meaning “to bury the spirit.” Each Moidam features a burial vault, a hemispherical earthen mound, a ritual platform (Chow-Chali), and an octagonal wall with a western entrance.

In early times, Moidams were constructed using timber, but as the Ahom reign progressed, brick and stone became the preferred materials. According to the Ahom Buranjis (royal chronicles), the dead were buried with a wealth of items like clothing, ornaments, weapons, and personal belongings. (1/2)
