⚠️ 🇷🇺 A worker at one of Russia’s anti-plague institutes has died from plague in Siberia, triggering a quarantine and emergency containment operation involving nearly 200 people who may have come into contact with her.
The woman, reportedly 27 or 28, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. She was hospitalized on September 29 with severe pneumonia, placed on a ventilator and died roughly two days later.
Part of Shelekhov District Hospital has since been placed under quarantine.
Authorities and Russian media have identified at least 197 potential contacts. Reports say 189 have been hospitalized for medical observation and preventive treatment, including 12 being monitored at the anti-plague institute itself.
Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev says identified contacts currently show no signs of illness and laboratory tests have been negative. Some Russian media reports, however, say several people under observation have developed symptoms, with no secondary plague infection confirmed so far.
Russia’s chief sanitary doctor, Anna Popova, traveled to Irkutsk and joined an emergency anti-epidemic commission as authorities deployed containment measures.
How the woman became infected remains under investigation.
Russian media, citing sources, report that she may have accidentally broken a test tube containing live plague bacteria while working at the laboratory and later told doctors about the incident.
Another early account linked the infection to a recent work trip to Buryatia. Buryatia’s governor has rejected that version, saying she had not visited the republic and that the infection was unrelated to its natural plague reservoirs.
There is also an important discrepancy in the official accounts. Irkutsk authorities have so far publicly described the case only as a “particularly dangerous infection,” without naming the pathogen. Buryatia’s governor, however, explicitly said the woman died from plague.
Russian media have described the illness as pneumonic plague, but that specific form has not yet been publicly confirmed by Irkutsk health authorities.
No secondary plague infection has been confirmed at this stage.

BREAKING: Russia is secretly helping Iran develop advanced supersonic cruise missiles capable of directly striking US aircraft carriers and other warships in the Middle East, in one of the most significant known transfers of strategic military technology from Moscow to Tehran, per FT.
Senior Russian engineers have traveled to Iran and Russian manufacturers have worked closely with Iranian developers sharing key design and testing data. The main purpose is to help Iran develop a ramjet propulsion system. The multiyear covert program is codenamed C430L.
This comes as Putin himself directly confirmed today that Russia will help Iran deal with the US naval blockade, saying "we admire the courage of Iranians in this war. We are trying to provide you with the necessary assistance. We have discussed this and will provide you with the necessary goods."

ok this might be the most aggressively american startup i’ve ever seen 🇺🇸
> they’re trying to build nuclear reactors 100x faster than the nuclear industry ever has
> the founder isaiah taylor grew up on food stamps + dropped out of high school at 16
> his great-grandfather literally worked on the manhattan project
> generations later isaiah built a working nuclear reactor before turning 28 and named it “ward” after him
> the pentagon used 3 military c-17s to airlift the reactor 700 miles from california to utah in a first-of-its-kind mission
> the company culture is hardcore americana
> they hold bible studies, offer raw milk, love fast cars + have a cigar lounge
> plus 4 gigantic patriotic paintings of columbus discovering america, the pilgrims arriving on the mayflower, the signing of the declaration + the constitutional convention
> they sued the nuclear regulatory commission for slowing them down
> valar's end goal is to build the same reactor thousands of times across nuclear “gigasites” to make energy 10x cheaper
> then they'll use that energy to pull carbon out of thin air and turn it into oil and gas for supreme energy abundance
> just raised $1b at a $6b valuation to scale it
> if valar pulls it off, isaiah’s family will have helped usher in both of america’s atomic ages
yeah this gets my vote for most badass startup of the year
