I feel so lucky to have had the chance to write for @nytimes@nytimeswell about how the pandemic/distance learning has pushed elementary school-aged kids into the social media deep end and what parents can do to help their kids navigate this new world. https://t.co/4NJWjJOps4
Somewhere, tween-nerd me is squeeing because I got to write about fanfiction and sci-fi/super-hero shows for The New York Times today: https://t.co/FFy2dx17T3
@liu_angela I've never submitted to the New Yorker. But I am guessing this isn't a form rejection with its "while there is much to admire in this story" -- but yes, rejections are a part of a writer's life. I prefer rejections (form or not) to silence, which also happens :(
@GraceLP Awww, hugs. I know what you mean. Everything else seems to pale into trivialities when there’s so much suffering in the world right now. But I also think the world still needs stories, needs light, however dimly it may seem to shine in the backdrop of so much darkness.
@broadwaybabyto I mask, and I really believe in masking (although I don’t make my middle school age children do it since their classmates don’t) and even I feel the need to qualify/justify why I do it (eg, I see my aged parents often) because it feels awkward.
@lolaannamendez Yup, same. Freelancing has really dried up for me :( And I'm experiencing pitch fatigue -- I'm sure editors I'm pitching are experiencing it too from the other side... Wondering if it's time to throw in the towel...
@TiaTashiro Gorgeous story, and difficult - but in all the best ways good stories always are. You're fast becoming a writer whose stories I'll read without question, as soon as they come out. Congrats!!
@leverus My references are a bit dated, but I was obsessed with the Belgariad series by David Eddings and the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander when I was 12.
@liu_angela We are in such a product-oriented, hustle culture that this is an important lesson to learn! Of course, I have many false starts and no product as far as stories go, so that’s probably no good either.
It was a honor writing about these health insurance stories for the New York Times. Thanks
@JessamynStan @iangoldsteinyes and others for talking to me: https://t.co/lGjL4EwTof
