My father once told me the secret to a happy marriage.

“Stay out of the kitchen. Let her handle the holidays.”

I was 19. He was in his recliner.

My mother was cooking for 14 people.

She’d been up since 5 AM.

He’d been up since the football pregame.

I didn’t think anything of it.

That’s just how it was.

Fast forward 20 years.

I’m in the recliner.

My wife is in the kitchen.

She’s been up since 5 AM.

I’ve been up since the pregame.

My daughter walks by and I see her watching.

Not the TV.

Her mother.

Then me.

Then her mother again.

That’s when it hit me:

She’s taking notes.

My father taught me that holidays were for men to rest and women to work.

He didn’t say it.

He showed it.

Every Thanksgiving.
Every Christmas.
Every Easter.

The recliner passed from him to me like an inheritance I never asked for.

This morning I woke up at 4 AM.

Not for content.

For the turkey.

My wife found me in the kitchen at 6.

She didn’t say anything.

She just stood there.

Then she cried.

Your kids are taking notes.

Not on what you say.

On where you sit.

The recliner is an inheritance.

Be the generation that stands up.

My daughter (4th grade) says to me,

"But dad, out of 60 kids I'm one of only 3 in my grade WITHOUT a phone!"

Me: "I'm glad to know there's 2 other sets of great, intentional parents besides your mom & I!!"

My daughter: uhhhh dad......

HOLD THE LINE PARENTS.

Kids don't need access to EVERYTHING in the world so young.

Loving your kids isn't GIVING THEM EVERYTHING THEY WANT.

Loving your kids is teaching them:
•DISCIPLINE.
•DELAYING GRATIFICATION.
•SETTING HEALTHY BOUNDARIES.

It is absurd so many CHILDREN have phones.

Most adults can't use them responsibly.

You're setting your child up for failure handing them unrestricted access to everything so young.

Father, your word tells us that “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers” (Proverbs 11:14).

Today we come before You asking for a miracle: Change the hearts and minds of those make the decisions for our nation. Change their selfish motives for power and wealth into hearts that seek Your face. Let Truth and the glorious Revealer of that Truth, Your Holy Spirit, become their chief advisors. We know that the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes (Proverbs 21:1).

Expose the evil strategies devised in the hearts of wicked men in secret places so that they might be humbled and brought to repentance. “There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known” (Luke 12:2). For we know that You are not mocked and what they sow in private they will reap in public (Galatians 6:7). Bring them low so that they might see their own wickedness and shame and be saved.

Forgive us for exalting fallen men and women and putting them in the roles that should be exclusively Yours. You alone are our Savior, Provider, Healer, and Lord. Forgive us for falsely believing that real hope can be found in a ballot box or an office of delegated authority. All power comes from YOU, O Lord, our God! (Psalm 62:11)

Grant us the wisdom to choose the leaders for our nation that will provide the greatest freedom for seeking You and remove every obstacle and device that would hinder them from being Your servant. We thank you Father for our nation and we ask You to spare it from falling into the hands of idolaters.

In Jesus’ name
