DiNardo (2008) defines a natural experiment as a "serendipitous randomized trial" (https://t.co/Q3Pj6r2ng2). In our recentered IV paper (https://t.co/JsBorNOMFy), Kirill and I interpret that as saying you know something about the "design" of observed shocks -- i.e. that you can redraw shock counterfactuals via the natural randomization protocol

DiNardo calls strategies which rely on properties of the unobservables, such as by a parallel trends assumption, "quasi-experiments." These days one might call PT "model-based," to contrast it with the "design-based" approach that does not require any such restrictions (e.g. https://t.co/r5EiGVfTWY)
