This is gonna be a re-telling of the meeting that occured and then the reflections I had just now by talking about it to my friend.
I'll make lots of assumptions based off my intuition that might be completely off, but I don't want that to keep me fro expressing my thoughts.
Had a very interesting interaction yesterday and just talked with my friend about it, I will share my analysis in its entire once I'm free to write about it later tonight.
"I wouldn't have said that exact word in that language so there is literally no such thing as a difference in quality between any two terms used for a translation"
What a moron. How embarassing. I hope he was told to say that line else it's assured he's not conscious.
Christopher Nolan and Tom Holland on using "modern" language in The Odyssey,
Q: You say "Dad" rather than "Father." What's the thinking behind that?
Holland: I wouldn't have said "Father" back then anyway, it would've been in Greek.
Seeing statements like this by people I usually consider sensible is disillusioning.
Disagreeing with the original red card is one thing but this is the same as the leftist pretending not to understand idiocy.
So you're telling me that, in soccer, playing with all the members of your team is considered cheating? Is this like those offsides rules that no one understands?
@themrlostman@TallowFan@GarrettPetersen Don't be shy, not like digressing has ever stopped you before.
After all this entire convo is sustained by you being unable to differentiate debating two character's strength versus debating how well they are written in their respective story.
@themrlostman@TallowFan@GarrettPetersen "wHo wOuLd wIn jAiMe oR aRaGoRn" isn't an actual point of contention and only something clickbait accounts post to farm engagement.
Jaime is a regular human while Aragorn is not. Of course Aragorn is stronger.
But that doesn't mean Jaime's combat capacity. was badly written.
@themrlostman@TallowFan@GarrettPetersen A character who is only human can be better written and their battle prowess much better depicted than a character who can destroy planets, depending on the skill of the author writing said character.
That is the discussion kicked off by OP. Regardless of who is actually better.
@themrlostman@GarrettPetersen I assume you have never read ASoIaF.
You just circlejerk the anti ASoIaF memes from Tolkien stans which are about as accurate in grasping GRRMs work as the memes about LOTR being simplistic writing with only black or white morality.
@themrlostman@GarrettPetersen His feat of how many knights he killed while outnumbered, almost getting through to Robb, clearly lets us infer Jaime's great skill as a warrior.
Then we see a POV character witness his skill despite him being chained and malnourished after months of capture.
@TallowFan@GarrettPetersen The quoted tweet prompted a separate conversation, on which Jaime vs Aragorn has no bearing, since it concerns how effectively GRRM has portrayed jaime's combat prowess in his writing as opposed to Tolkien did for Aragorn.
Both me and OP agree Aragorn is stronger than Jaime, yet
@themrlostman@GarrettPetersen Of course Aragorn is stronger than jaime, Jaiem is only a mere mortal and he's lived a far shorter life than superhuman Aragorn.
GRRM was stupid to ever make that comment.
Now that we've got that out of the way, everything I said still stands uncontested.
Get it?
@themrlostman@GarrettPetersen Doubling down on your illiteracy instead of admitting you acted emotionally is pathetic.
Nothing that I/OP said is changed by whether Aragorn would beat Jaime, because the topic was the way in which GRRM let readers know about Jaimes combat ability within his fictional universe.
