@Fire5280 Solid take.
We just ask our guests to not leave food out (on dishes or overflowing garbage). That's it.
Basically: don't be gross.
We take care of the rest.
You've definitely exposed the tension, I agree.
Most normal people are sitting on the sidelines watching this debate.
The people in the ring are saying "don't be gross" and the response is "I'm paying you so that I can be gross".
Food left out, no matter where that food is (dishes, overflowing garbage), is gross.
"Cleaning fees" are a scam, I agree. But that's no excuse for some people to live like feral pigs the moment they check into an Airbnb.
I'm not saying you do that, I'm saying that's the tension.
Airbnb was based on a high trust model.
In an attempt to grow their business, they've attracted unscrupulous hosts and disrespectful guests.
The system is already showing stress fractures.
I don't think that airbnbs should position themselves against hotels because although they share a Venn diagram, they are very different product designed for different needs.
Muddying that value proposition has done nothing but piss everyone off in the process.
Absolutely ripe for disruption.
I take your point. I don't want to be pedantic but it's never 5-10 minutes.
But what youve really uncovered is the real pressure point: how does a platform based on high trust, account for unscrupulous hosts and disrespectful guests?
It's now low trust (clearly). That won't stress test well.
With any luck, a lot of gross guests will opt for hotels and unscrupulous hosts will go into foreclosure. The rest of us can get back to operating in a high trust environment.
I've never experienced that. But I absolutely wouldn't stay there.
We don't charge a cleaning fee at our Airbnb's. We only ask that food not be left out anywhere. Cleaners take care of the rest. Seems reasonable to me.
We get gross people from time to time, and there's no way to avoid/account for it, and we end up on the short end of all that. But for the most part, people are very respectful of our home.
@AdvisorJohn I'm with you man. I mean, don't be gross. It's like some weird percentage of the population wants to become feral the moment they stay in an Airbnb.
