Gunmen have killed poet and former government schoolteacher Abdur Rehman, known by his pen name Amn (“Peace”), in his hometown of Pishlor, Shangla. I had never heard of him before, but it is difficult to comprehend what threat a teacher and poet, one who chose “Peace” as his literary identity could have posed to anyone. A tragic and deeply disturbing loss.
On this International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, I stand in honor of all those who serve—and have served—in pursuit of peace, far from home and under the toughest conditions.
