This Father's Day let us give thanks for the greatest poem of the Patriarchy, ever: The Odyssey.

The story opens with 4 books on the conspicuous absence of the father. What happens when Patriarchy collapses?

Matriarchy? No, anarchy. Suitors who have no responsibility for the estate, nor care for its reputation or perpetuation, are nonetheless devouring it.

The Son (Telemachus) is stunted in his growth. The town council hasn't met in 20 years (mere "dads", not Patriarchs).

The Lord of the House has spent years battling the forces of wild entropy: weather, famine, monsters, dangerous women, chthonic deities. He's taken some hard punches and made some mistakes.

But it has all convinced him of the existential necessity to risk all, and re-establish order: for his son, for his wife, for his dependents, for his People.

Winning back his rightful place in the rocky dirt of Ithaca is a prize so beautiful it is worth worth trading immortality for.

Thanks to all the fathers who have made civilization possible, who have stood up and fought for order, no matter what forces might arise and attempt to dissolve it.
