This Pulitzer for the @BetterGov & @chicagotribune is wonderful recognition for powerful work. I am also thinking today of Shamaya Coleman, her children and the dozens of others victims in Chicago who died. The city still has not fully addressed the issues raised in our stories.
@rldesmondjr@bariweiss I appreciate you being a subscriber. I am as well a longtime subscriber and I’ve worked for the Tribune since 1998. If you wanna have a civil discussion about how newspapers and the news industry has changed I’m all for it. If you want to toss out snide one liners, I’m not.
It’s a shame what @bariweiss has done to the gold standard of TV journalism. A disgrace. And also clearly someone who can’t handle the truth said plainly. The makings of a bad journalist.
The kind of context few but @rap30 can deliver: How the Chicago Bears' stadium deal collapsed in Springfield — an echo of the 1988 White Sox drama https://t.co/1CcurVDoZ4
State Sen. Bill Cunningham, IL Senate pointman on Bears stadium: "We're less concerned about what exactly the Bears want than we are concerned about what senators can live with, what senators think protects the taxpayers. This is essentially an offer to the Bears...."
Our update at 7 p.m. on May 31: Illinois lawmakers closing in on $56B budget deal backed by gas tax windfall and some election-year tax breaks https://t.co/yvm361TeYX
Our story. Will be updated as warranted: Illinois lawmakers race to finalize $55B budget as Bears stadium talks take back seat on final day of session https://t.co/xjrwg0hGD8
Our updated story: Illinois lawmakers roll out $55B budget plan as Bears stadium talks back to square one on final day of session https://t.co/xjrwg0hGD8
Caught @DonHarmonIL exiting the governor’s office a bit ago, who said on the budget: “I'm not expecting any new taxes on real people.” (Asked to clarify what that meant, Harmon said: "Human beings.")
Gov. JB Pritzker says he updated NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about potential Bears stadium legislation and maintained the Bears and NFL are only considering a new stadium in Arlington Heights or Indiana — not Chicago. https://t.co/tJsm986bxu
@chicagotribune won the Pulitzer for Local Reporting for coverage of the federal immigration raids — Midway Blitz — last fall. A true staff award but I worked with these three editors a lot on those stories. Congrats @StacyStClair, Erika Slife, @JeffCoen:

A big loss for the Chicago Tribune and for our newsroom. Copy editors get less public recognition than they deserve. They save us reporters and editors all the time. Quietly. And Jeff did it brilliantly as well.
