So, the Streatham Wells LTN has been ‘suspended’ and motor traffic has massively increased on the residential roads that the LTN previously protected, but at least it’s solved the problem of gridlock on Streatham High Road…Oh.

@CoyModemKnight IMO it would be better to schedule trains as usual, and then if there is a delay so be it. In that way 200+ onboard passengers are not guaranteed to have to the wait eight minutes unnecessarily. I guess it’s the delay repay culture that is making TOCs nervous. Oh, the irony!

@CoyModemKnight The usual scheduled journey time Balham to Mitcham Eastfields is 7 minutes. Today, presumably in case of potential delays at Streatham Junction, the scheduled journey time increased by 8 minutes. So, yes, extended dwell time due to an increased journey time that was not required.

@CoyModemKnight Please see my second tweet to Southern. Trains are not arriving early at Mitcham Eastfields, but are leaving eight minutes later than usual. I suspect the added dwell time is an insurance policy against a possible delay at Streatham Junction (around 200 passengers pay the price)!

@SouthernRailUK Thanks Hannah. I won’t be taking it any further here, but just to say that there are no other services in the area today (in fact, fewer than usual), and there is absolutely nothing in front of the southbound train to delay it (plus plenty of spare platform space at Sutton).

If anyone at @SouthernRailUK can explain why trains from London Victoria to Sutton (Hackbridge route, southbound only) are scheduled today to dwell at Mitcham Eastfields for eight minutes, I would be interested to know!

@SouthernRailUK Thanks Hannah. I was on the train earlier, so actually experienced the 8-minute wait! The attached screenshots, showing departure times on Balham to Mitcham Eastfields services are the evidence: (1) today 15-minute journey time, versus (2) typical 7-minute journey time (Monday).
