There is a certain kind of person you find in every office, completely invisible when things are going fine & then somehow standing right there, sleeves rolled up, when everything has started falling apart around everyone else. Dhananjaya de Silva is that person for Sri Lanka, except his version of fixing things involves a cover drive so clean it makes you briefly forget the scoreboard exists.
His entire career reads like someone set difficulty level to maximum & forgot to tell him. In his 3rd Test, 26 for 5 against Australia & he walks out & makes 129.
Delhi 2017, another collapse, another hundred from 35/4 that saved a Test match Sri Lanka had no business saving.
Durban 2019, 110 for 5, he & Kusal Perera put on 96 together in one of those partnerships that should be more famous than it is.
Galle 2022 vs Pakistan, 117 for 5 & he scores 109.
In Wellington in 2023 he made 98 after following on. In Galle later that year he made 122 & 82 from 54 for 4 & 99 for 4. In Colombo against Pakistan he walked in at 36 for 4 & made 57.
Sylhet 2024, Sri Lanka somehow find themselves at 47 for 4 in first innings & 64 for 4 in second & Dhananjaya scores 102 & 108 in same Test. Manchester Test in 2024, 74 off 84 after 40 for 4 & then 69 runs in Oval Test when Sri Lanka were 93/5.
Yesterday followed the same template so faithfully it was almost funny. Sri Lanka 42 for 3, drifting to 110 for 5, out he comes & makes 120, not in a scrambled panicked way but in that unhurried authoritative way where the boundaries come through covers & you start wondering why Sri Lanka even bother with the top order at all.
Since 2020, he has accumulated 2495 Test runs at 44.55 with 7 centuries, an average that nudges ahead of Gill, Head & Pant across the same years, which most people do not know because Sri Lanka do not always win even when he does everything right.
He has a gorgeous cover drive, a tempdrament that borders on suspiciously calm & some kind of deeply personal agreement with crisis situations that the rest of us are not privy to.
Most players need the platform, Dhananjaya apparently just needs the platform to be on fire first.
A captainโs knock when it mattered most! ๐ฏ๐
Dhananjaya de Silva anchored the innings with a brilliant 120, guiding the team to a competitive and well-balanced total.

A captainโs century carved with power, pride, and purpose - not just runs on the board, but a statement to the world. Sri Lankaโs lioness roars again! ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐
